The story I told this week, to me, is an example of a true crime classic. An unsolved missing persons case turned double homicide. It has everything, coerced confessions, autopsy debate, multiple suspects, confusing eye witness reports, even a "psychic".In 1956, two teen sisters, Barbara and Patricia Grimes went missing after a night out at the movies. The city of Chicago was rocked by this tragedy, but no one could have predicted that we would get to 2023 and still be searching for the murderer. There is nothing more maddening than knowing that a child murderer has been out here living his (or her, but probably his) best life. Eye witness fails
In my most recent podcast episode, I talked a little bit about eye witnesses. In this case, they mostly consisted of tips called in by people who claimed to have seen the two victims on the evening that they went missing. And it was clear in the case of the Grimes sisters that a lot of these sightings could not have been real, the girls would have had to have been in multiple places at the same time. Impossible!Eye witnesses have been key evidence in all sorts of crime investigations since forever. They've largely been seen as very important, and you'd be hard pressed to find many murder trials that lack any eye witness testimony. But eye witness testimony is SO unreliable. Faulty eye witness testimony was responsible or partially responsible for approximately 75% of wrongful conviction cases that were later over turned through DNA evidence. It's actually kiiiiiindof outrageous.I find this so interesting from a psychological perspective. It's clear that most people who give faulty eye witness testimony are not lying. Usually it's the case that they are simply misremembering something, or giving their best guess. This phenomena has been very thoroughly studied, and understood, yet eye witness testimony is still relied upon so heavily, and is often very compelling even today. Here are some resources to read up (or listen up) on this subject:Scott Fraser Ted TalkEye Witness Testimony and Memory Bias And or people interested in the Scott Peterson case (me!) especially the eye witness part of it, here is the arguments on either side of that debate:Laci Peterson sightingsDebunking eyewitness testimonyThoughts?
German doppelgänger murder
(Khadidja.O. left, Shahraban, K right)I saw this story on instagram initially, and it is ongoing so we don't have all the answers, but it's pretty brutal. So, here is what we know:(fun fact: Germany's privacy laws prevent the media from using the last names of both suspects and victims of crimes.)August 16, 2022 parents of 23 year old German/Iraqi woman named Shahraban. K found her dead in her own car. She had multiple stab wounds to her body, and her face had been terribly disfigured. An investigation into this homicide began.August 17, 2022, police took fingerprints and DNA to make sure they had identified this body properly, but results of these tests revealed that this body was not Shahraban. K. This was actually the body of a 23 year old German/Algerian woman named Khadidja. O.So, that is shocking. But there's more. Upon investigation, the police found out that this appeared to have been a premeditated murder. They discovered that Shahraban had been fishing around on social media. She created a bunch of different profiles, mostly on instagram, and began reaching out to girls and influencers online who all shared one thing in common. They all resembled Shahrban physically... She kept trying to offer them things to lure them into meeting with her. Finally she succeeded in luring Khadidja. On the day of the murder, she and her boyfriend, 23 year old Sheqir. K. picked up Khadidja from her residence. As they drove from one town to the next, they pulled over into a wooded area and lured Khadidja out of the car where they proceeded to stab her multiple times until she died. Then, they disfigured her face, and left her in Shahraba's car for her parents to find. Presumably, they left Shahraba's id's, and clothing with Khadidja to make it look like it was her, and then the couple fled. How fucked up is that? There are still minimal details, and we have yet to hear what the motive was. Why did Shahraba want to fake her own death? What was she running away from?My guess, based on what we know, is that her family disapproved of her boyf. We know that the couple committed this crime together, so it's assumed that they planned it together and had a shared goal in mind. Plus, love is the ultimate motive right? Especially among the young and stupid.Hopefully we find out, although, often the motive is never revealed. Either way, this was a completely senseless act and a young woman's life was stolen in an utterly brutal fashion. I hope these two are tried, convicted and rot away in German prison. Assuming they're guilty. I'm certainly interested in hearing any other guesses on motive, hit me up if you think I'm wrong.

Danny Masterson's trial declared a mistrial. Kind of old news, but I just discovered it.
Dreading covered the Shanquella Robinson case, I now think I finally understand what happened.
