Gannon Stauch

This week begins my multi part series on the murder of 11 year old Gannon Stauch. The trial for this case only recently came to it's conclusion. And we got the verdict that everyone was hoping for.

I've been actively following this case for years now and I think it is a good time to get into the details.  Prep yourself to get very upset.

Big moves for Paul

One of Canada's most notorious rapist and murders Paul Bernardo had made headlines this week. Some of our politicians have come out to condemn the decision made in Paul's case to move him from a maximum to a medium security prison.

A little about Paul for those who don't know him:
Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka, AKA "The Ken and Barbie Doll Killers" were a "good looking couple" who spent their time committing rape and murder together.  Bernardo, was the mastermind who enjoyed subjecting his captives to unimaginable torment, while Homolka, eagerly participated in the attacks. The most shocking part of their crimes were that Homolka's own sister fell victim to the couple, followed by the abduction, rape, and murder of two other unsuspecting girls. That, and the fact that Karla escaped a life sentence due to some shady behavior on the part of the defence team and is out and about living her life among us. And she's had three children.

There is A LOT more to the story, which we covered back in the beginning of Who's Knocking in four parts.

Since their incarceration Paul has remained in maximum security and was deemed a dangerous offender, which keeps him from being released as Canada does not have a true life sentence without the possibility of parole.

This move has started an interesting conversation on the purpose of Canada's corrections system. Obviously politicians and other experts and citizens are outraged by the move, no reasonable person want's Paul to experience any sort of improvement in his living conditions giving his HEINOUS crimes. But some within the legal system are arguing that the prison system in Canada is not about revenge, that it's meant to work towards rehabilitation.

Personally I think that's a little bit rich. I tend to lean towards the opinion that there are a certain portion of inmates who are too far gone, and unfortunately beyond help. If anyone in Canada should be placed in that category, it is our dear Paul. In circumstances like his, I think the goal of the prison system should be to keep him separated from the public for our safety.

The move from a maximum to a medium security prison will potentially have Paul mingling with other medium security prisoners. Prisoners who almost certainly have an end date to their sentences. I happened to think that Paul is a danger to those other inmates, and to the people that these inmates may one day cross paths with.  We saw the way he infected Karla's mind and convinced her to agree to attack and rape her own sister. Do we really think that he's been rehabilitated to the point of being above that type of behavior? Or has rotting away in his tiny cell year after year made him even more resentful and cynical. I guess we'll see...

Serial killer in Portland?

The internet went crazy this week after it was discovered that 6 women under the age of 40 have been found dead in the last three months. All of the bodies were found in the Portland area within 100 miles of each other. The people of the internet have been speculating that there is a possible serial killer on the loose!

Police agencies started clapping back a few days ago, urging people to calm down and saying that as of now, there is no established connection between the victims. And so far, only one of the cases has been officially declared a homicide.

Let me share the facts of these cases that I have gathered:

- There have been 6 women found deceased on either the side of the road, or secluded rural areas. 5 of these women are white and have been positively identified, one is suspected Native American who has not been identified (at least publicly). Since she is the only one still unidentified, I will refer to her as Jane Doe.

-Only one of the women's deaths has been ruled a homicide. This does not mean that the others are not homicides, but it obviously makes a huge difference when were thinking about a possible serial killer on the loose.-The Jane Doe was found inside of a tent and police have said that there is no reason to suspect foul play in her case.

-It looks like most, if not all of the women went missing about a month or more before they were found.

I think a lot of people are rushing to conclusions, both out of fear, and also, out of a morbid fascination with serial killers. Not judging, I personally have a morbid fascination with serial killers! But, let us not wish them into being.

It's difficult. We can point to many cases where law enforcement failed to recognize a pattern, or withheld information from the public which led to deadly outcomes. At the same time, we can also look at the countless times that we POTI have rushed to judgement, and have been wrong.

Whether or not there is a serial killer out there, that is a very large number of dead women. That is upsetting no matter how they died.

But, let's all take a collective deep breath and wait for more information.
