Hey hey!
Remember me??? I'm back after a long summer time hiatus, and fall I guess. I wasn't gone for any interesting reason, just had to watch my own children over the summer. But I'm back and I will be picking up where I left off.
So many horrific things went down over the summer and up to now. This letter will go over things that stuck out to me, please hit me up with anything I may have missed!
Happy to be back!
Madison
Ps. There were way more things than I had space for in this letter, I will go over more next week.
My Pod
Gannon Stauch
We are back on the pod as well! I will be wrapping up the Gannon and Letecia Stauch series with two more parts that cover everything to do with Letecia's trial. I watched the whole thing and I'm going to focus heavily on the mental health expert witnesses, of which there were four. And one of them stuck out like a very sore thumb....You can watch or listen to this episode on Apple, Spotify or Youtube. And maybe subscribe to us on youtube, if you want :)
Gilgo Beach Serial Killer
This was definitely one the biggest stories to unfold since I've been away. And to be quite honest, I'd actually never heard of the the Gilgo Beach Killer, or as some called him, the Long Island Serial Killer.
He's been a mystery for many years, and it's actually unclear just how many people he's responsible for killing. But it is assumed that he is responsible for the deaths of a number of young sex workers, who's bodies were all found near one another.
The case had gone cold about 10 years ago, and it seemed like the killings had stopped, or maybe the person responsible just found a new place to hide bodies... But in January of 2022, the investigation was reopened.
Police got a tip from a witness about a Chevy Avalanche car seen around the time of the murder, which led police to 59 year old Rex Heuermann.
Rex is a creepy individual. He's extremely tall and daunting. Neighbours said he kept to himself and was kind of nasty. No one really had anything nice to say about him. And in typical serial killer fashion, the man had a wife and kids.
Police got a bunch of search warrants and subpoenas and were able to get enough evidence to arrest Rex. He's been charged with 3 counts of first degree murder and 3 counts of second degree murder in the deaths of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman and Amber Costello. He is also considered the prime suspect in the murder of Maureen Brainard-Barnes.
So far Rex has plead not guilty. So I guess we'll see...

That Scientology guy
Sexual assault allegations against Danny Masterson came to light in 2017. 3 women came forward in March and by December, a fourth and then, a fifth.
And investigation ensued which resulted in charges for three sexual assaults. The two remaining incidents did not go forward, one for lack of evidence and in the other case, the statute of limitations had run out.
Another layer to this case is that both the perpetrator, Danny, and all of the victims belonged to the Church of Scientology... And the victims claimed that they went to the church with their allegations and were told not to go to the police and essentially to shut up. Shocking.
Now this is not the first, and I'm sure will not be the last time that an elite member of the COS has been outed as a predator. Scientology has become well known for their grooming of celebrity members. They praise these people, treat them like literal gods walking among them and allow them to victimize whoever they want with no consequences.
The allegations were quite aggressive and included multiple instances where the women claimed that Danny spiked their drinks and raped them, one at gun point. It sounded very Bill Cosbyish. And the fact that there were so many allegations really gave credibility to these women. Many people noted that they'd taken a long time to come forward, which is sometimes a reason to be suspicious about such claims. But given that at least some of them had gone to the church a long time ago and some of them to the police, who failed to pursue and investigation at the time, this didn't seem like a strong point against them. Further, given the Church's history of horrific behavior, it makes a lot of sense that these women didn't come forward sooner.
Danny had his first trial in November of 2022, which resulted in a hung jury. The outcome of the second trial was 2 guilty verdicts.
In September of 2023, Danny was sentenced to 30 years to life, although he still maintains his innocence and plans to appeal. It is likely that he could be released in 25 years.
What really got people going were actually the letters of support written by Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher. They got hella cancelled for those, and the couple has since apologized. It's clear that they didn't think these letters would ever reach the public. Awkward...
For anyone interested in diving into the scientology rabbit hole, I suggest following Leah Remini on twitter. She's an ex-member and has been doing everything in her power to expose the church. If you have 2 hours to spare, start with Leah on Joe Rogan.

Richard Allen or White Supremacist Cult?
A lot is going with Richard Allen, the suspected Delphi murderer.
Richard's defence team put out a 136 page memorandum that laid out their case. They are alleging that Abigail and Liberty were not killed by Richard Allen, but instead were ritually sacrificed by white supremacist Odinist cult.
For those of us unfamiliar with Odinism, here is a brief rundown:
Odinism refers to a belief system that centers Odin, who is the Norse god of war and death, among other gods. Odinism came out of medieval European pagans. It's been alleged that some white supremacist groups, have taken over the symbols of Odinism. For example, there is an "anti-immigrant" group out of Finland who call themselves Soilders of Odin. They would deny being white supremacists and instead say that they came to be in response to the thousands of migrants arriving in Finland during the European migrant crisis. I guess it's a matter of perspective?
I am always skeptical of groups being labeled as racist or white supremacist these days, these terms seem to be thrown around rather loosely. But this is a case where I'm inclined to see the connection.
So the defence team for Richard Allen is alleging that there are some known Odinists in the area and the there were some signs of a ritualistic sacrifice at the crime scene, which would suggest that the murders were done by these white supremacist cult members and not their client. They also claim that several suspects with known ties to Odinism were dismissed as potential suspects early in the investigation.
Now it's clear that there were a of mistakes made during this investigation. This was definitely the biggest and most horrific crime to have taken place in Delphi, maybe ever.
BUT, the prosecution has CLAPED BACK. They are accusing the defence of making up a BUNCH of bullshit specifically aimed at us people of the internet who are surely going to go crazy over this shit. Which...is definitely true...Another very interesting tidbit. It is the defence who is pushing to have cameras in the courtroom and the prosecutors who are arguing to keep them out. Very unusual.
